Temporary Part Time Assistant Naturalist

DESCRIPTION: Seasonal position under general supervision of the Director and direct supervision of the Naturalist. The Assistant Naturalist will assist the Naturalist in the development and presentation of interpretive programs to schools, summer camps and other public groups as assigned. The Assistant Naturalist may also coordinate special events and programs, design and construct interpretive displays, prepare publicity materials including news releases and radio reports, preform occasional office work and cleaning and other duties that may arise. General maintenance and upkeep of the Conservation Center displays, educational supplies and grounds around the center as required. Assist with the promotional activities to stimulate public interest in the use of parks, including taking photos, brochure development, and speaking to the public. 


Education, Special Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major course work in parks & recreation, wildlife biology, ecology, natural resource management or a related field of study, or an elementary, middle or high school educator. Have an interest in educating youth and adults about our natural world. Relevant experience maybe considered in place of education. The applicant must also possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a chauffer’s license, have the ability to get to and from the work site, use hand and small power tools, and be physically able to work in extreme conditions (heat, humidity, steep terrain, and exposed to outdoor elements such as mosquitoes, ticks, and various plants, pollens, and fungi.). Willingness to research and learn about the natural history of the area. General knowledge of outdoor recreation such as hiking, biking, kayaking, and orienteering. Ability to prepare basic lesson plans and educational material. Ability to operate computers, audiovisual, photographic and other equipment necessary for program delivery. First Aid and CPR certification is preferred but not mandatory. Lift, carry, push and/or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be familiar with computers and audio/visual equipment. Must have a basic knowledge of teaching skills and be able to communicate with individuals and groups of all ages. 


WORK SCHEDULE: The employment period is June to August (specific starting and ending dates somewhat flexible) M-F 8-4:30 variable part time hours weekly. Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required. 


COMPENSATION: Range $14.00 per hour depending on prior experience.
